Placement of Handles and Knobs

New details are fun and the assembly just as well, but it can be a little tricky to agree on the placement of the new fittings. The goal is above all to place the fittings so that it becomes practical, but also neat and uniform. Whether you have a brand new kitchen where you are going to drill holes for the fittings for the first time or an existing kitchen where you want to replace knobs and handles, you will find tips that will make the decision of placement easier to decide in this post! - And you know what, there are no right or wrong!

We start with the practical, from top to bottom:

It is very common with overhead cabinets where the hinge is placed in the upper edge of the door, which means that it opens upwards. To make it easier to open and close the door, we recommend placement of the bracket similar to the sketch below.

Our recommendation is to either have a handle, an oval, or a shaped knob to get the best possible grip.

On top cabinets where the hinges are located on the side of the door, we recommend placing the handle on the opposite side, like the sketch below, to facilitate opening and clearly show how the cabinet should be opened.

When it comes to placing handles on drawers, the handles are placed like the sketch below to indicate that it is a drawer that is to be pulled out.

When it comes to countertops with doors, the handle is placed in the vertical direction on the opposite side from the hinges. It is practical and you quickly understand that there is a door to be opened and in which direction. See sketch below.
So the practical rules of thumb are as follows;

On drawers, the fitting is usually placed in the middle, while on doors, the fitting is usually placed on the opposite side of the hinges. Exceptions are doors that open upwards, then the handle is placed in the middle of the door, near the edge to facilitate opening and closing. On top cabinets, the handles are placed on the lower edge, and on the worktops, they are placed on the upper edge.

Placement on frame doors and frame drawers

Use the frame on the doors and drawers as a guide for the placement of the handles and knobs.

There are a few different variations on how to choose to use the frames. Some choose to place knobs and handles in line with the bottom edge of the frame and some choose to place knobs and handles in the right or left edge of the frame.

What we recommend is that you have the same benchmark on all doors and drawers to create a nice whole. A benchmark can, for example, be to have the same distance from the center of the fitting to the edge of the drawer or door as to the other doors and drawers in, for example, the kitchen or bathroom.

To get the distance from the bracket to the edge of the door or drawer, you can easily measure the thickness of the frame and place the bracket in the middle. You then use this measure as a benchmark for the placement of the remaining fittings and which will create a nice whole in your particular kitchen or bathroom!

Placement on plain kitchen doors and drawers

The question is how to get to the location without having any guidelines to follow from the door and the drawers themselves. Then you simply have to create your own guidelines!

One way to determine where on the drawer or door you should place your bracket is to take the smallest drawer front and place the bracket in the middle. Then you can easily get a measure of the distance from the fittings to the edge, which works 9 out of 10 times on all doors and drawers! A tip if you want to get an idea of the location can be to lay the hatches on the floor, - then it is easy to see what it looks like before the drill goes forward.

Feel free to mix knobs with handles, handles in different lengths, handles in the same length, knobs in the same diameter, or mix handles and knobs from the same series to create a nice whole in your particular kitchen, to create a completely unique feeling and style! There is no right or wrong and you decide how you want it in your kitchen.

If you are looking for a general size, you usually put handles and knobs 1.5 - 2.5 cm from the drawer or cabinet edge.

Something that is becoming increasingly modern is the profile handles, we have a variety of choices in different lengths, shapes, and designs, some of our favorites can be found in the pictures below. Profile handles are stylish and flexible against both doors and drawers, they are usually placed on the edge of the doors, preferably on the long side or in the middle of the drawers.

If you have an integrated fridge, freezer, or dishwasher, we recommend that you either run on handles, a T-shaped knob, or a slightly larger knob to make it easier to get a grip and easy to open.
